MOUTHWASHES
TO RINSE THE MOUTH, MOUTHWASHES ARE USED. MOUTHWASHES can be used
for both therapeutic or cosmetics purposes.
THERAPEUTIC MOUTHWASHES-
These
MOUTHWASHES are formulated to reduce Gingivitis,stomatitis, dental caries and
plaque.
COSMETIC MOUTHWASHES-
These mouthwashes are used to reduce bad breath through the use of antimicrobial or flavouring agents.
MOUTHWASHES GENERALLY CONTAINS 5 GROUPS-
1) HUMECTANTS
2) ALCOHOL
3) FLAVORS
4) SURFACTANTS
5) COLOURING AGENTS
1) HUMECTANTS-
Such as glycerine and sorbitol. They form 5-20% of mouthwash. Increase the viscosity of preparation. Enhance the sweetness of the product. Along with ethanol, it improves the preservative qualities of the product.
2) ALCOHOL-
It forms 10-20% of mouthwash. It function as solubilizing, preservative and flavouring agents. It enhances the flavour and provides certain sharpness to the taste.
3) FLAVOURS-
Flavours are used to overcome disagreeable taste. Principal flavouring agents are-
a) Peppermint oil
b) Spearmint oil
c) wintergreen oil
d) cinnamon oil
e) Methanol
f) Methyl salicylate
4) SURFACTANTS-
They form 0.1-0.5% of mouthwash. They are used because they help in the solubilization of flavour and removal of debris by providing a foaming action.
Anionic surfactant- sodium lauryl sulphate.
Cationic surfactant-Acetylpyridiniumchloride are used because of their antimicrobial properties but they impart a bitter taste.
5) COLOURING AGENTS-
Colouring agents are used to impart a pleasing favour to the mouth wash.
USES OF MOUTHWASHES-
1) Mouthwashes are used for number of specific problems in the oral cavity.
2) Chlorhexidine, gluconate for plaque control.
3) Amphotericin B for oral candidiasis.
4) Pilocarpine for xerostomia.
5) Hexatidine used as antimicrobial and antifungal agents.
6) Allopurinol used for the treatment of stomatitis.
7) Mouthwashes containing hydrocortisone, antihistamines, nystatin and tetracycline used to treat stomatitis and painful side effects of cancer therapy.
8) Astringent mouthwash-
They are required for the treatment of -
Sensitive gingival burns and soreness under dentures.
Can Mouthwashes are effective against novel coronavirus(COVID-19)???
It has been eight months, since we heard about novel coronavirus pandemic . Till date no treatment , no vaccine is available, so only thing we can do is the curb the spread of the infection.
From using face masks, face shield, boosting ones immunity , using disinfection kits and sprays and only emphasis has been to lead a virus free healthy life..
There was a myth that busted that mouthwash can cure coronavirus.., but is it true?
So the study suggests that for ORAL HEALTH gargling with mouthwashes can reduce the viral particles in the mouth and throat.
Using mouthwashes could be the key to lowering
the spread of deadly (CORONAVIRUS) infection.
So using MOUTHWASHES can reduce the risk of spread of COVID-19 but there is no study that suggest that CORONAVIRUS can be cured by Mouthwashes.
