Fluoroquinolones

          FLUOROQUINOLONES





This are quinolones antimicrobials having one or more fluorine substitutions. 

Fluorination of the quinolone structure at position 6 and introduction of a piperazine substitution at position 7 resulting in a derivative called fluoroquinolones. 


Classification-

First Generation fluroquinolones-

Norfloxacin                       ofloxacin

Ciprofloxacin                     pefloxacin


Second Generation fluroquinolones-


Lomefloxacin                     sparofloxacin
Levofloxacin                       Gatifloxacin
                                               Moxifloxacin

                   Ciprofloxacin

It is the most potent first generation fluoroquinolones against a broad range of bacteria. 


Types of fluoroquinolones

  • ciprofloxacin (Cipro)

  • levofloxacin (Levaquin/Quixin)

  • gatifloxacin (Tequ

  • ofloxacin (Ocuflox/Floxin/Floxacin)

  • norfloxacin (Noroxin)



Adverse effects of fluoroquininoles-


1.Skin and Hypersensitivity-

Urticaria, swelling of lips, pruritis, rashes and photo sensitivity. 

2.Tendonitis and Tendon rupture-

3.CNS-

Seizures are rare. Tremors, dizziness, headache, anxiety, insomnia, impairment of concentration, restlessness. 

4.GIT-

Vomiting, anorexia, nausea. Bad taste and diarrhoea are infrequent. 


Uses of fluoroquininoles-

Ciprofloxacin-

1)  It is not suitable for minor infections. 

2) It is not suitable for majority of Oro dental infections. 

3) Not a primary drug for respiratory tract infections.

4)  For systematic infections-
Bacterial gastroenteritis, urinary tract infections and typhoid fever.
