Uses of tetracycline

     USES OF TETRACYCLINE





1) Orodental infections

  • Tetracycline are of limited usefulness in treating acute dental infections. 
  • They are useful in certain forms of periodontal diseases. 
  • They are useful in periodontal inflammation by scavenging free radicals. 
  • It has a adjuvant role in the management of chronic periodontitis and in juvenile periodontitis. 
  • To control gingival inflammation tetracycline (1g/ day)  Or doxycycline (0.1-0.2g/day) therapy to be used. 
Tetracycline are highly active against actinobacillus species which is responsible for destruction of gums and bone loss in juvenile periodontitis. 

2) General Medicinal uses

They can be used for initial treatment of mixed infections.







Tetracycline are the first choice drugs:

1. Brucellosis-

Tetracycline are highly efficacious. Therapy used is doxycycline 200mg/day+rifampin 600mg/day for 6 weeks. Gentamicin may be combined with doxycycline in acute cases. 

2.Plague-

Tetracycline are highly effective in both bubonic and pneumonic plague. 

3.veneral diseases-

Lymphogranuloma venereum resolves in 2-3 weeks. Fir Granuloma inguinale tetracycline is given for 3 weeks. 

4.cholera-

Tetracycline have adjuvant value by reducing stool volume and limiting the duration of diarrhoea. 

5.Atypical pneumonia-

Psittacosis is treated in 2 weeks by tetracycline. 

6.Relapsing fever

7.Rickettsial infections-

Typhoid, Qfever respond dramatically.






Tetracycline are the second choice drugs: 



  • To penicillin/ampicillin for tetanus, anthrax, actinomycosis and listeria infections. 
  • To ceftriaxone, amoxicillin for gonorrhea. 
  • To ceftriaxone for syphilis in patient allergic to penicillin. 
  • To azithromycin for pneumonia. 
  • To azithromycin for chancroid. 

Other situation in which tetracycline may be used are: 

  • Urinary tract infections. 
  • Community accquired pneumonia
  • As adjuvant to quinine
  • Acne vulgaris. 
  • Chronic obstructive lung diseases. 
  • Amoebiasis.
