These are class of antibiotics having a nucleus of four cyclic rings.

Chloramphenicol
In 1947 chloramphenicol was obtained from streptomyces Venezuelae.

The chloramphenicol has a nitrobenezene substitution which is responsible for antibacterial activity and it's bitter taste.
Most commonly used broad-spectrum antibiotic is ampicillin.
